National Centre of Pathology, Affiliate of Vilnius University Hospital Santariskiu Klinikos, is the largest pathology department in Lithuania with more than 30 years experience in pathologic diagnostics.  The Centre serves over 200 public and private medical institutions in Lithuania, specialized tests are performed for Latvia and Kyrgyz Republic health care institutions. Pathology diagnostics volume per year is about 40,000 surgical pathology cases (constituting one-quater of Lithuania’s workload), near 60,000 cytopathology tests, appr. 1000 molecular pathology and 150 electronic microscopy cases.

The Centre has 15 pathologists in staff who are experienced in various fields of tumor pathology as well as specialized areas of renal, liver, and hematopathology. Experienced pathologists who perform both gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytopathology are also on board. Professionalism of the pathologists is complemented by excellent work of laboratories that are modern renovated and provide superior histology service. In addition to routine histology and histochemistry techniques, over 170 immunohistochemistry are in use and await further development. Lab techniques also include FISH for hematology, soft tissue tumors, carcinomas, electron microscopy - mostly for nephropathology, Tissue microarray (TMA), Laser capture microdissection (LCM), Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (HPV, STD), Real-time PCR (KRAS, BRAF, EGFR), Aperio virtual microscopy platform, TissueGnosticsTM system for bright and dark field image aquisition and analysis. Centre also own and develop project-driven Biological Resource Centre.

Professional and technical potential of the Centre is further enhanced by development of quality management systems and information technologies. National Centre of Pathology has 10 years experience of College of American Pathologists Laboratory Accreditation.  The Centre has developed in house information system PathIS® that supports management of pathology lab workflow and quality control as well as storage of the data.

The Centre runs educational and certification programs for pathology and cytology technicians in Lithuania. In partnership with Vilnius University, medical students and pathology residents are trained and continuous medical education programs for pathologists and physicians are carried out.
